More than seven million older people living in Ukraine are currently at risk as a result of the Russian invasion. Whether they decide to stay in Ukraine or to leave the country, older people deserve equal access to humanitarian aid.

Ensuring and facilitating the participation of older people in all decision-making processes is a human right and a key objective of our work. It is also the best way to make sure policies will meet the needs of the older population and effectively address the challenges of an ageing society. Read more

Seniors under attack – disinformation targeted at Europe’s older people

As our societies become more digital, disinformation is also spreading. A growing trend that can have a detrimental impact on vulnerable people, as the COVID pandemic has revealed. An issue recently addressed during a webinar hosted by MEP Radka Maxová.

Following the announcement of war in Ukraine on 24 February, several members shared AGE’s standing with the Ukrainian people. Many have also been involved in fundraisers, collections of primary goods, and generally raising awareness of the situation of the Ukrainian people and the large number of older persons who are affected.

Our Belgian members, Respect Seniors, Enéo and Entr’âges have joined forces with 9 other associations to call for a humane and uniform legal regulation on visit to nursing homes during the COVID pandemic that are debated and voted in Parliament.

UN reports shortcomings in the protection of older people and calls for new convention
A report by the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCR) published in February takes stock of the progress made by the UN Open-ended Working Group on Ageing over its 11 working sessions held since 2011 and the work of the Independent Expert on the enjoyment by all older persons of human rights. Read more
Older people rights and climate change: UN looks at risks and solutions
The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights held a meeting on 30 June 2021 on climate change and the rights of older people. It discussed how older people will be more severely affected and what countries and organisations can do to mitigate this impact.

As part of the upcoming Ministerial Conference on Ageing in Rome on 15-17 June 2022, the UNECE is launching a call for proposals for a poster exhibition under the title “Older Persons in Emergency Situations".

Looking for older people to comment on global falls guideline
Despite developments in effective approaches to preventing falls over the past decades, the number of older persons who fall continues to rise. Established in 2019, the Global Falls Guideline Task Force aims to develop guidance for health care practitioners based on the best available evidence to prevent and manage falls in older persons.

Spanish pensioner campaigns to ensure access to banking services for older people
As he was tired of the difficulties he faced every time he went to his bank to manage his account, a 78-year-old Spanish retired doctor recently launched a campaign urging for making the access to banking services easier to older people. Following the success of the campaign, the reaction of banks had not been long in coming.
